Your situation
Your deposit is being withheld
Deposit disputes come down to records: what the unit looked like, what the law required the landlord to send you, and when. Gather yours while it's easy to find.
First — do this now
- Find your move-in photos, the move-in checklist, and your lease.
- Keep the deposit statement or itemization the landlord sent — or write down that none arrived, and when it was due.
- Write down your move-out date and the day you returned the keys.
- Keep every message about the deposit, including any promises made in person — write those down too.
- Check the deadline your state gives landlords to return or itemize a deposit — missing it can change what they owe.
Build the record
Save your deposit receipt, move-in and move-out photos, cleaning receipts, and any letters about the deposit. Semptify stores these in your vault so you can show the condition of the unit and the payments you made.

Know the facts
Minnesota law limits when a landlord can keep a security deposit and requires them to return it or provide an itemized statement within a set time. Check the current statute with Semptify's law library, and keep your lease, receipts, and move-out photos for your records.
Laws differ by state and situation. The law library has the referenced material, and legal aid can tell you how it applies to you.
If it goes further
If your landlord refuses to return a deposit that you believe is owed, do not accept a bad deduction without understanding it. Gather your documents and talk to a tenant advocate or attorney about your options.
With your own workspace
If your deposit is not returned or is deducted, first check the Minnesota deadline and itemization rules. Then send a written request for the full amount or an explanation. Semptify can look up the rule and help draft the request, but this is not legal advice.
